Josep Tarrés

Curriculum review related to Art and Mathematics

At school and then at university, Josep Tarrés develops his abilities towards technology. As an industrial engineer, he puts into practice his skills with construction of machinery, industrial installations… that leads him to industrial design; for instance, furniture for his private use.

Josep’s international concerns leads him to study English and do his master’s degree in the USA. Back home, he works on foreign trade and marketing campaigns. His participation in FEBRER, a growing company with designs and decoration items for stores (mannequins…) stands out. So, for example, he gets lamps (art and technology) of groundbreaking design to Hollywood.

Josep’s career takes him to different professional positions, some related to graphic design (publishing books…), industrial design or pictorial art. Later, he becomes professor at Department of Architecture and Construction Engineering at University of Girona for 13 years.

In recent years he continues to be active in Art and Technology with the design of geometric objects which leads him to actively participate in Bridges, the international conference of reference in Art and Mathematics. It all started in 2008 as curator of the exhibition “Recreational Science. From Josep Estalella towards 21st century”, for instance, with the design of the hypercube module (mathematical unfolding of the cube) in the fifth dimension as an evolution of Salvador Dalí’s Corpus Hypercubus artwork (1954 painting with the tesseract as a cross-crucifix).

Josep Tarrés continues with his experiences in Art and Mathematics either directly with new works of geometric art or indirectly in the R&D of new technologies. He also participated in the 2009 JAEM, Conference for learning and teaching mathematics. In 2020 he became a member of MMACA, Museum of Mathematics of Catalonia.

All of this leads him in 2019 to propose 2 artworks and a paper at Bridges 2019, the international congress of reference in Art and Mathematics, which, to his surprise, were accepted. The congress took place in Linz, Austria; there he contacts the world elite of Art and Math. In subsequent years he also participates to the point of having about 10 works exhibited.

This intense activity entails being on the cover of the prestigious academic magazine SCM/News from Catalan Society of Mathematics, a subsidiary of the “Institut d’Estudis Catalans” with the written article “The Bridges Congress of mathematical connections”. The traditional press is also echoing: “Mathematical art”, Diari de Girona (19 Feb 2022). At the same time, he gives lectures related to the subject such as “The magic of geometric art” (26 Feb 2022) and about geometric stars (17 Jun 2023).
